The Africana Studies Institute encourages students to take advantage of Experiential Global Learning. We asked one of our Africana Studies majors, Edgar Jarvis, to share his recent trip abroad to London, England.
This summer, I have been able to study abroad in London, England, and through my stay there, I have explored the city, experienced British culture, and gotten used to a different lifestyle. Staying in London has helped me step out of my comfort zone, meet various kinds of people, and learn about the city’s history and diverse nature.
My weeks have been a balance of academics and personal experience. On Mondays and Tuesdays, I attend my British Life and Culture course, where we learn about British history and culture through lectures, tours around London, and assignments such as a midterm paper, a research paper, and a final quiz. Every other Tuesday, I attend my internship field experience course, where I reflect on my internship and discuss how it connects to my academic and career goals.
I’m currently doing an internship with a business agility consultancy called Sooner Safer Happier from Wednesday to Friday. While I was at the firm, I was involved in a number of activities, but most of my work focused on helping the company boost its online presence through search engine optimization (SEO) and other channels. The internship has been very valuable to me on a personal and professional level.
Studying abroad in London has been a great experience. It not only provided me with a chance to develop myself in various aspects but also to live in one of the oldest and most diverse cities in the world.
